Potential Women’s Volleyball Medal Winners

According to the FIVB world rankings, U.S.A. sits in the No. 1 spot, while China and Brazil follow close behind. China took the gold in the last Olympic Games in 2016 and Brazil secured the gold in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

USA to finally secure Olympic gold?

Though the U.S.A. team sits at the top of the leaderboard heading into the Olympics, they have yet to win gold in any Olympic Games. U.S.A. is a very experienced and disciplined team this year, so they are definitely in the running for gold especially with players like Haleigh Washington, a force in the middle, and the young gun on the outside, Kathryn Plummer.

Can you look beyond Brazil?

The team close behind Team USA is Brazil. As one of the biggest volleyball powerhouse nations in the world, Brazil is always in the running. On the Brazil team, they have Tandara Caixeta who is a strong scorer with her hits, blocks and aces. Their setter, Mácris Carneiro, as well as their libero, Camila Brait, are both very competitive in their sets and digs, so Brazil is looking like a well-rounded, competitive team this year.

Will home advantage work for Japan?

Japan and Turkey are also in the running. These teams both have their strengths and weaknesses. Both teams have great servers who can serve hard and score aces. Japan’s setter, Aki Momii is one of the best setters of the competition and it helps that they will be playing on their home turf. Turkey’s libero, Simge Şebnem Aköz, is a wiz in the backcourt so getting the ball to hit the floor will be a challenge for any opponent.
